Pagerank

PageRank is Google's link-based algorithm for estimating the relative importance of a web page from the quantity and quality of links pointing to it.

  • Audit your backlink profile to identify high-quality and toxic links.
  • Prioritize earning links from authoritative, relevant sources.
  • Use internal linking to distribute PageRank to your key pages.
  • Don't fixate on the old toolbar score—focus on real traffic and rankings.

What I'd do first

  • Understand that PageRank is about link authority, not just link counting.
  • Audit your backlink profile using Search Console or a tool like Ahrefs.
  • Focus on earning links from authoritative, relevant sites.
  • Optimize internal linking to pass equity to your most important pages.
  • Don't chase the old toolbar score—it's gone.

Plain-English take

Think of PageRank like a popularity contest for web pages. If a page gets a link from a well-known, trusted site (like a major news outlet), that's a strong vote of confidence. But if the same page gets a link from a spammy directory, it barely counts. Google also considers how many other links the referring page gives out—if it links to hundreds of pages, each vote is diluted. So it's not just who links to you, but how much weight each link carries.

When it actually matters

  • Building backlinks: You're deciding which sites to pursue for guest posts or partnerships.
  • Internal linking audits: You want to ensure your cornerstone content gets the most link equity.
  • Competitor analysis: You're comparing why a competitor outranks you despite similar content.
  • Site architecture redesign: You're restructuring navigation and need to preserve link flow.

What I got wrong

  • I used to think PageRank was a single score I could optimize for. It's actually one of many signals.
  • I confused the old public toolbar score (0–10) with Google's internal calculations. The toolbar metric is dead.
  • I assumed all backlinks were equal. A link from a high-authority site with few outbound links is far more valuable than one from a link farm.
  • I ignored internal linking. PageRank flows through your own site too—don't waste it on orphan pages.
