Semrush Free Tools

The strongest argument for Semrush's free tools is that you can test them without a credit card. Most of the no-registration tools – Domain Overview, Domain Authority Checker, Position Tracking – load results in seconds. I plugged a competitor's domain into the [Domain Authority Checker](/domain-authority-checker/) last week and had a traffic estimate, top keywords and backlink count inside ten seconds. That speed matters when you are making a snap decision about whether to target a niche.

The Keyword Magic Tool is genuinely useful for brainstorming. Type in a seed term like "running shoes" and it returns hundreds of related keywords with search volume, trend data and keyword difficulty. I used it to find a long-tail variation – "trail running shoes for overpronation" – that had decent volume but low competition. That keyword went straight into my content plan.

The Site Audit tool catches the obvious stuff. On a friend's 80-page ecommerce site it flagged 12 broken internal links, three missing title tags and a handful of oversized images. I could export the report and fix everything before the site lost any more crawl budget. For a small site that is exactly the kind of check you need. The 100-page limit hurts, but if your site is under that you get a proper technical audit for free.

I also appreciate that some free tools work without any account at all. The [Website Traffic Checker](/website-traffic-checker/) and Keyword Magic Tool are accessible from Semrush's Free Tools page without logging in. That means I can check a domain or explore keywords while I am on a call or working from a shared machine without compromising my own data.

The free account's daily caps are the first frustration. You get 10 Domain Overview queries per day, 10 keyword research queries, 10 backlink queries, and only 10 keywords in Position Tracking. I tried to monitor a set of 15 keywords across three competitor sites and hit the query limit before lunch. That is not enough for any serious competitive analysis – you have to prioritise painfully. I used to think the free tools were enough for client work; I was wrong. One client with a 400-page site required a full audit, but the Site Audit only crawled the first 100 pages. Critical issues on deeper product pages went unnoticed until they started losing rankings.

Rank tracking is almost useless at 10 keywords. On any real campaign you need to track at least 30–50 terms across multiple locations and devices. The free Position Tracking only shows desktop rankings and you cannot set up daily tracking. For a local business with a handful of phrases it might work, but for an ecommerce site or an agency it is a non-starter.

Another awkward point is that the free tools treat each data point as if it were a full platform feature. The Keyword Overview tool, for example, gives you search volume, trend and competition – but no SERP features, no seasonal peaks and no click-through rate estimates. When I was comparing two keywords for a blog post, the free version told me both had similar volume but the paid version later revealed one had a featured snippet. I chose the wrong keyword and missed an easy click-through opportunity.

I also found that some tools require registration even though they are listed as "free tools". The Site Audit and Position Tracking need a free account. That is fine, but it is not obvious from the marketing page. If you are trying to stay anonymous or avoid yet another account, you are limited to Domain Overview and the [Rank Tracker](/rank-tracker/) (which is also capped).

If you outgrow the free caps, the first alternative I reach for is [Ahrefs](/ahrefs/) free tools. Ahrefs offers a Backlink Checker, Keyword Generator and Site Audit that work without registration and with higher limits on some queries. I ran a backlink check on a competitor's domain and got the top 100 backlinks without signing up. That is more than Semrush's free version gives you, and the data quality is comparable. For keyword discovery I also use [Ubersuggest](/ubersuggest/). It gives you up to three free searches per day with decent volume data and keyword ideas. It is not as polished as the Keyword Magic Tool but the caps are more generous.

For technical audits I rely on [Screaming Frog](/screaming-frog/) SEO Spider when the free Site Audit falls short. You can crawl up to 500 URLs per project for free – five times Semrush's limit. It catches redirect chains, missing hreflang tags and duplicate content without needing an account. I have used it to audit a 300-page site and found issues the Semrush free audit missed because the page limit cut off the crawl.

For rank tracking I switched to [SE Ranking](/se-ranking/) (they have a free trial) and for competitive traffic analysis I supplement Semrush with Similarweb which gives you more generous free limits for comparing multiple domains. Google Trends is also a underrated free tool: I use it to validate seasonal patterns for keywords before committing to content. None of these tools replace Semrush's paid suite entirely, but together they cover most of what the free tools cannot handle – and often with fewer restrictions.
